CEO Kim Hyun-hyo “Leading the next-generation battery and hydrogen economy”

- Hyunhyo Kim, CEO of Ilshin Autoclave
- Focus on hydrostatic pressure and dispersion equipment with ultra-high pressure technology

- Applied from MLCC production to all-solid-state batteries, food sterilization, etc.

- New industries such as localization of hydrogen filling station valves are also busy

- "Specialization of subsidiaries with future industry-leading technology, challenge for IPO"

[Daejeon=Edaily Reporter Kim Ho-joon] “We will preoccupy the all-solid-state battery market, which is the future food, with ultra-high voltage equipment.”
Ultra-high pressure equipment used in industry has been mainly applied to the food sector. Large food companies have been using this equipment imported from Japan and Europe because it safely removes harmful bacteria without applying heat.

Recently, however, ultra-high voltage technology has been used in various fields, from the production of multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCC), which is called the 'rice of the electronics industry', to all-solid-state batteries, which are next-generation batteries (secondary batteries). Established in 1993, Ilshin Autoclave It is a strong small company that stands out. It localizes ultra-high pressure pumps and dispersing equipment (nanodisperser), which were mainly dependent on Japanese or European products, and supplies them to various companies such as Samsung Electro-Mechanics (009150), Kolmar Korea, and Next Bio. Recognized for its unrivaled technological prowess in Korea, in 2019, it was selected as one of the ‘Materials/Parts/Equipment Small Giants 100’ hosted by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups.

Kim Hyeon-hyo, CEO of Ilshin Autoclave, who majored in material engineering in college, founded the company after working for a pressure vessel importer used in the nuclear field. CEO Kim said, “Pressure vessels were mainly imported from Japan, but once an order was placed, it took one to two years for delivery, making it difficult to use them properly.” Even compared to foreign companies, our technology is not lagging behind,” he said confidently.

Recently, the company has entered the all-solid-state battery market, which is the future food, by using ultra-high voltage equipment. All-solid-state batteries are attracting attention as next-generation batteries because they replace the internal electrolyte with solids from liquids and have a low risk of explosion. Already, battery conglomerates such as Samsung SDI and LG Energy Solutions are actively conducting related research and development by paying attention to this part. However, all-solid-state batteries have the disadvantage of short battery capacity and life because the internal electrolyte is solid, and the ability to transfer lithium ions between the positive and negative electrodes is reduced. At this time, if the solid electrolyte is compressed with ultra-high pressure equipment, the internal ionic conductivity can be increased and the battery performance can be dramatically improved.

CEO Kim hinted, “We are close to the level of commercialization so that the ultra-high voltage equipment can be used immediately for all-solid-state battery production.”

In addition, Hiflux, a subsidiary of Ilshin Autoclave, is busy localizing parts such as tubes, fittings, and valves for hydrogen charging stations and hydrogen vehicles. Hydrogen energy-related parts and equipment require the application of special materials or processing technology because of the brittleness of hydrogen that penetrates fine cracks in metal. The company is currently working on a project to create a KS standard for hydrogen energy parts with institutions such as the Korea Automobile Research Institute and Korea Gas Safety Corporation.

CEO Kim said, “The more hydrogen energy infrastructure is built, the faster the related materials and parts industry will develop.” We are the only place that develops it,” he explained.

Another subsidiary, Pumpster, is promoting the localization of HIP (Hot Isostatic Pressure) equipment that processes metal and ceramic parts used in aircraft and automobiles by utilizing high-temperature and high-pressure technology.

As each affiliate expands its business, the sales of all affiliates increased from 20 billion won in 2018 to 37 billion won last year. CEO Kim said, “We plan to expand our business by specializing subsidiaries for each technology that can lead the future industry.”
